AFF 2012 Review: IT’S A DISASTER

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

I absolutely loved this hilarious dark comedy about a couple’s brunch that just happens to be on what may be the end of the world, or at least the United States as they know it.  Well, these couples are definitely not feeling fine, as their personal problems begin to surface, particularly those of hosts Emma (Erinn Hayes) and Pete (Blaise Miller).  When it comes to everyone’s attention that some enemy force has attacked the U.S. with a catastrophic weapon threatening to wipe everyone out, Emma, Pete and their guests are trapped in the house and forced to face their issues.

If the film sounds a bit dark and demented, well, frankly it is, but writer/director, and University of Texas alum, Todd Berger does some amazing work here, particularly with his script which gives his talented cast wonderful material with which to work.  The cast includes Julia Stiles, David Cross, America Ferrera, Rachel Boston, Jeff Grace and Kevin Brennan.  Every single member of the cast has a moment to shine in both comedic and slightly dramatic capacities.  My only complaint is with one particular character that got on my nerves.  Jeff Grace’s character Shane annoyed me with his nerdy, negative vibes he brought to the group. I know, the character is intended to annoy, but thought his jokes/gags wore thin after a while.  Nevertheless, I must encourage fans of dark comedies to watch out for this movie.  This was probably the funniest film I enjoyed at AFF.
