Cine Las Americas 18: LA ISLA MINIMA/MARSHLANDS

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

From Spain comes this intense crime investigation that forces two very different detectives to work together to find a serial murderer before he strikes again.  In the marshlands of Southern Spain, Juan (Javier Gutierrez) and Pedro (Raul Arevalo) investigate the disappearance of two sisters who have recently disappeared. After digging deeper, they discover their disappearance is one of many that have taken place over several years. The ideological differences between the detectives, along with some skeletons of the past make catching their predator even more difficult.

Written by Rafael Cobos, who co-wrote with director Alberto Rodriguez, La Isla Minima is an intense and nail-biting suspense-thriller that has all the typical elements of a police procedural movie, but still delivers some solid entertainment.  The solid writing by Cobos and Rodriguez in addition to the stellar performances of Javier Gutierrez and Raul Arevalo make this film a must-see. I especially recommend this movie for fans of crime investigation movies.  A friend of mine who also attended this film screening mentioned that anyone who love True Detective will certainly relish in the intensity of this movie.
