Local News: AFCA Announces Its New Inductees

AUSTIN FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION WELCOMES SIX NEW MEMBERS

 

Austin, Texas — The Austin Film Critics Association is pleased to announce its selection of six new members to its 2014 roster:

 

Taylor Devorsky has written film reviews for GotchaMovies.com since July 2013. Taylor is a radio-television-film student at The University of Texas at Austin, and aspires to work in film acquisition and distribution while still engaging in film criticism.  

 

Jeremy Kirk is a film critic for FirstShowing.net and co-host of the Golden Briefcase film podcast. He has reviewed film regularly for nearly 20 years. Receiving a B.A. in Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a minor in journalism, he also served as director of the Student Programming Council’s film schedule his senior year. Jeremy has contributed to websites such as Film School Rejects and WeAreMovieGeeks.com, among others.

 

Linc Leifeste is a freelance writer who joined Smells Like Screen Spirit as a film critic in 2011, where he also serves as associate editor. He also contributes regularly to Texas Music magazine and has contributed to the Oxford American magazine’s website. While not an Austin native, Linc got here as fast as he could, arriving in town in 1992 to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he eventually earned an English degree while also spending many hours watching films at the Dobie Theater.

 

Jenny Nulf is the Editorial Manager for GotchaMovies.com. She started reviewing films for the site two years ago, after she graduated from the University of North Texas with a film degree. She also is the social media and website manager for the Austin Asian American Film Festival.

 

Michael Saulters has been a film critic for Slackerwood since 2010. He has also contributed reviews and festival coverage to Ain’t It Cool News since 2004. Michael assisted with shorts programming for Fantastic Fest 2012 and the Austin Film Society ShortCase program for SXSW 2014, and is currently on the programming team for aGLIFF/Polari. Michael received a BS Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was fortunate to study communications under future Peabody Award Chairman Horace Newcomb.

 

Elizabeth Stoddard has written reviews and covered Texas film for Slackerwood since 2010, and is a former writer and news editor for Austinist. She grew up in Austin, attending the former Liberal Arts Academy at AS Johnston High School, and graduated cum laude from Austin College in Sherman, Texas with an English major and a minor in music/voice.

 

Founded in 2005 by Cole Dabney and Bobby McCurdy, the AFCA has seen its membership grow to over 30 members with a diverse roster of professional film critics who regularly review movies for national television stations, daily newspapers, weekly alternatives, local radio, monthly magazines, and websites with international prominence. Each December, AFCA members vote on the year’s best in film, celebrating excellence on both sides of the camera.

 

The outlets AFCA members represent include Ain’t It Cool News, the Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Chronicle, Badass Digest, DVDActive, Fandango, Film.com, Film School Rejects, FirstShowing.net, GotchaMovies.com, Hill Country News, Horror’s Not Dead, KOOP Radio, Movies.com, One Of Us, ScreenCrush, Slackerwood, Smells Like Screen Spirit, Twitch, and YNN Austin.
