A major dramatic epic that takes place almost entirely in the cramped confines of a Nazi U-Boat. The large crew goes about its deadly business in unspeakably dangerous conditions under the direction of their captain played by the deservedly acclaimed Jurgen Prochnow. By the time Ingmar Bergman made this gentle, moving story of youth he had been one of the world’s most inspired creators of cinema for over 30 years. He made many masterpieces. This is one of his most important ones, a great artist’s reverie on childhood, its many storms and doldrums. He is aided by the cinematographer Sven Nykvist who does some of his most beautiful work here. It is composed and shot with the care of an old master, a film that in itself ennobles the entire art form. This is the 188 minute theatrical version.
