BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

I really didn’t know what this film was about based after viewing the trailer but I thought I would give it a try anyway because sometimes I am pleasantly surprised as recently with Warm Bodies.

This film is a supernatural love story set in the South, Beautiful Creatures tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town. (c) WB

Although the special effects and look of this film is good I still felt it was missing something then I realized that to me the writing was from a teenager’s point of view.  Twilight and Red Riding Hood come to mind and I abhor those films because they are teenage rubbish.  As the reader might expect, I am not the demographic for those films.  Don’t get me wrong this film is not a total loss because of the supporting characters like Macon (Jeremy Irons), Mrs. Lincoln/Sarafine (Emma Thompson), Aunt Del (Margo Martindale), Amma (Viola Davis) and Gramma (Eileen Atkins) who carry this film for the most part.  Honestly, they are what really drew me to see this film.

This film is entertaining but I thought the stellar cast was underutilized by a mediocre script.  There are some great special/visual effects but it isn’t enough to make up for the lackluster script.  I thought with so many great actors it couldn’t be too bad and overall it isn’t but I wished it delved deeper because when the end finally came, I thought it fell short.
