Review: EXTRATERRESTRE (EXTRATERRESTRIAL)

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

This hilarious comedy from Spain created quite a buzz at the 2011 Fantastic Fest that I knew it would go on my must see list.  Thankfully, Cine Las Americas collaborated with Fantastic Fest to bring this movie (along w/ Sal) to their film line up this year.  Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, this motion picture is not what most people would expect from a movie with Extraterrestrial as its title.  Vigalondo focuses more on comedy and less so on the science fiction aspect of his story.  After a crazy night of partying, Julio (Julian Villagran) wakes up in the bed of the lovely Julia (Michelle Jenner), a girl he barely remembers meeting.  They realize that an alien invasion has begun and the entire city has been abandoned.  Not certain about what they should do, Julia and Julio remain in her apartment.  Things get a bit awkward when Julia’s nosey neighbor Angel (Carlos Areces) gets involved and even more uncomfortable when Julia’s boyfriend Carlos (Raul Cimas) arrives.

This wonderful comedy plays out like a feature length situation comedy.  I mean that in a good way.  Vigalondo’s script has some crazy funny scenarios which play off the awkwardness of the situation.  The characters of Julio and Julia seem to be more concerned about Carlos finding out about their one-night stand than they are about the invasion.  Vigalondo’s characters’ web of lies, which entangles everyone concerned, makes for some hysterical comedy.  One does not have to be a fan of science fiction whatsoever to enjoy this movie.  This film introduced me to Nacho Vigalondo’s work and now I wish to watch some of his other movies.
