Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

I went into this new Spider-man installment expecting to see a great manyf over the top special effects and on that front, this film does not disappoint.  Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young but his path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner.  Parker is bit by a super spider, turns into Spider-man who then searches the city looking for the man who killed his beloved Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen).  The difference here is the find his killer plot line gets lost when Parker crosses paths with Dr. Connors and discovers he has been transforming into a lizard with plans to turn everyone else into one as well.

I did truly enjoy both British actors Garfield and Ifans performances, because I thought they brought realness to their characters.  Ifans makes a wonderful pseudo villain.  I am a huge fan of his work and loved the fact that he is become more of a well-known actor globally.  The entire supporting cast does well in their roles; Martin Sheen (Uncle Ben), Sally Field (Aunt May) and especially Denis Leary (Captain Stacy).  For some reason, I found Emma Stone’s (Gwen Stacy) portrayal to be a little flat.  The last film I saw her in was THE HELP and her performance there is spectacular.  This time I didn’t feel any depth in her portrayal.

The special effects, to be expected, are extremely well done and, yes, in 3D.  Don’t get me wrong, there are some scenes worthy of 3D but for the most part not warranted.  I don’t think it added much to my overall experience of this film.  I do like the new spider-man suit and the spider logo with the long legs, even though I don’t like spiders for the most part.

Although this film is well made and acted, I must admit that I am over the Spider-man thing.  This will be the fourth SPIDER-MAN film in ten years and I think it is time to move on.  I do recommend this film, but save some money and go to a matinee.
