SXSW 2019 Review: BOYZ IN THE WOOD

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

Every year, SXSW usually has a wonderful assortment of great comedies, and this year was no exception. From the UK, comes this delightful, hilarious and biting comedy that pulls no punches and beautifully wallows in absurdity. A group of delinquents decide to participate in a special youth program that is intended to inspire leadership skills and teamwork while hiking through the Scottish Highlands. When the boys get attacked by older, masked killers, their leadership and survival skills are put to the ultimate test.

Boyz in the Wood is an absolute riot of a horror-comedy flick that is sure to please fans of both Edgar Wright and Taika Waititi. Writer/director Ninian Doff is obviously well-schooled in this style of comedy and gives this subgenre a voice of his own. The young cast in additioned to a few surprise seasoned veterans offer exceptional performances. This is a blast of a midnight movie that deserves an ardent cult following.
