SXSW: Offers a Multitude of Free Events


Austin, TX – March 5, 2012 – South by Southwest (SXSW) is pleased to announce something for everyone at our free events! SXSW offers events for people interested in video games, high tech meetups, making films, watching films, musical equipment, music posters, fashion and, of course, lots of music! First up is the the 2012 SXSW ScreenBurn Arcade sponsored by Alienware, an emporium of geek lifestyles, showcasing the newest video game releases as well as game-related toys, gear and more – and it’s FREE and open to the public! Stop by and immerse yourself in the future of gaming culture. Discover new game technologies and compete in exciting game tournaments for all skill levels. The 2012 ScreenBurn Arcade runs Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11 at the Palmer Events Center. Highlights include IGN Pro League gaming tournaments featuring Starcraft II, Street Fighter X Tekken and League of Legends. GE Garage: Want to feel the power of a blow torch? Ever wondered what you might be able to do with a 3-D printer? This is your chance to find out. Just stop by the GE Garage, a new SXSW Interactive Lounge at the intersection of Guadalupe and 4th Street, and start tinkering with these tools and much more. The GE Garage will be open from Friday, March 9 through Saturday, March 17.

PostSecret + BLUEBRAIN: A Multimedia Event

PostSecret, BLUEBRAIN and Fireman Creative team-up for an exciting new live multimedia performance. Always innovative, BLUEBRAIN will live score the latest PostSecret video composed of artful, funny, sexual and heart-breaking secrets. Bring your own secrets and be ready for some surprises on Sunday, March 11 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center in Exhibit Hall 5

SXSW Community Screenings: Slacker 2011

Richard Linklater’s SLACKER inspired a generation of American filmmakers by exploring the subculture of Austin, Texas in a loose narrative with a tapestry of quirky characters. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of that iconic movie, 24 of Austin’s top filmmakers banded together to update SLACKER with their own perspectives on the city. Takes place, Tuesday, March 13 at 9:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theater. Free and open to the public after badges & film passes have entered.

George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center

SXSW offers two weekends of free events taking place at the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center (1165 Angelina Street). The first weekend March 9 – 11 features Film and Interactive events and the following weekend March 16 – 18 features Music events. These events are presented in conjunction with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department.

Friday, March 11
6:00pm – 9:00pm: Blacks in Technology Meet Up
The annual Blacks in Technology Meet Up offers the perfect networking opportunity to renew connections and sync up itineraries for the weekend. There will be free-flowing libations, a Texas inspired hors d’ oeuvres menu and a sizzling live soul auditory experience for your pleasure – along with DJ Phife spinning the best in eclectic neo-sounds.. This event will also feature remarks from digital guru Quincy Jones III as well as a presentation of the first ever BiT Top Ten Awards recognizing the top ten African Americans who made the biggest impact on the technology sector in 2011.

Saturday, March 10
11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: SXSW Community Workshop: Austin School of Film Youth 3D Workshop
Under the guidance of professional award-winning animator Jeanne Stern, participants use their imagination to create miniature worlds that will then be presented as 3-D film on the big screen. No experience necessary, and lunch will be provided. This workshop is free and open to ages 11–18. To participate, contact the Austin School of Film at Spaces are limited, so sign up now! Finished work will screen at SXSW on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the Vimeo Theater (Austin Convention Center).
Also on Saturday, March 10 form 6:00 p.m. – 7:25 p.m., SXSW Film presents the Texas High School Shorts Screening where Texas high school students offer a glimpse of a bright future of Texas filmmaking.

1:30 p.m.: SXSW Community Screenings: “Faces of Austin”
FACES OF AUSTIN is a short film exhibition showcasing the work of Austin filmmakers and their works that reflect the many diverse faces, voices, and experiences that make up Austin’s unique identity. Faces of Austin is presented by the City of Austin.

4:00 p.m.: SXSW Community Screenings: “Dysfunctional Friends”
Nine estranged friends are reunited after their larger then life friend unexpectedly dies. The friends who haven’t seen each other in years are forced to stay at the estate of their deceased friend for the weekend. There they must reconnect with each other and settle their issues if they wish to collect their inheritance.

6:30 p.m.: SXSW Community Screenings: “1 out of 7”
Based on actual events, this film takes you on the journey of a teenage girl trying to escape her abusive mother and in the process finds herself joining the forgotten “street kids” living in the shadows of Portland. Her search for belonging spirals from unforeseen consequences to a gripping end depicting the plight of today’s at risk youth.

Join Sauti Sol, Invincible, Negin Farsad, Riders Against the Storm, and more for a day of live comedy, music, film and dialogue to inspire the fusion of cultures in America. Short films and stories that capture East Austin’s vibrant culture will be shared all day.
2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.: Dialogue! Join Invincible, Negin Farsad, Tanene Allison and more for music, spoken word and discussion to explore how culture can spark a more welcoming Africa.
4:15 p.m. -5:30 p.m.: Workshop! Musicians, comedians, filmmakers and social media gurus share ideas and get involved. By invitation only.
6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Comedy! Laugh with some of the funniest comedians in America and their hysterical take on the immigrant experience. With Negin Farsad, Lucas Molandes, Chris Cubas and more.
7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: Music! Hear one of the hottest bands in Kenya, Sauti Sol, blend it all together with their unique brand of Afro-Fusion.
9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.: Remix America Dance Party! Embrace our roots and shake it loose with DJ Martin Perna and Riders Against the Storm. This dance party has hip hop, Afro-Latin soul and more.

Free SXSW Music Events at the Austin Convention Center

Music Collectors will want to check out the Flatstock Poster Exhibition and Collectors Show sponsored by HGTV and co-presented by the American Poster Institute (API) and SXSW, Flatstock 33 will display the works of more than 100 artists from across North America and the globe. The exhibition is free and open-to-the-public running Wednesday, March 14 – Saturday, March17 at the Austin Convention Center in Ballrooms ABC and features posters representing decades of styles, colors and techniques for sale. Show up early and be ready to be overwhelmed with amazing posters.

Also in the Austin Convention Center, SXSW will host Music Gear Expo. Returning for its third year as the exhibition for musicians and enthusiasts, The Music Gear Expo is a cornucopia of guitars, keyboards, amps, effects pedals, drums, mics, DJ equipment, gear workshops and more. Come try out the newest, coolest, cutting edge instruments, register for giveaways, meet the gear pros. Visit the Gear Expo Store run by Strait Music for a guitar tune-up and gear accessories like strings, drum heads, cables and cool instruments from manufacturers in the show. The Expo takes place Wednesday, March 14 – Saturday, March 17 and is open to the general public.

Style X is your opportunity to discover new brands, shop at an event as diverse as SXSW itself, wear the most stylish gear not only from your home city, but from cities around the world and to emerge yourself into what’s next in the fashion world. The event will be held at the Austin Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17 and is free and open to the public.

Free Concert Series at Auditorium Shores
Don’t miss it – three nights of FREE concerts at the SXSW Auditorium Shores Stage on Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin.
