SXSW Review: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

A paranoid grocery clerk, Kenneth (Mark Duplass), places an ad, seeking a partner with whom to time travel, “safety not guaranteed”.  Upon discovery of this strange ad, three magazine employees, Darius (AubreyPlaza), Jeff (Jake Johnson), and Arnau (Karan Soni), seek him out to uncover the real story.  Darius answers Kenneth’s ad and becomes a part of his mission.  In the process of preparation and training for the trip, Darius and Kenneth grow close.  Her story assignment becomes more than that when she develops feelings for Kenneth who may or may not actually be insane.

Written and directed by Derek Connolly, this film tells an adorably sweet tale of love, friendship, and time travel.  It is a story of big improbable dreams, the desire to change one’s past and the reality behind second chances.  Because not everyone gets those second chances, it also makes the strong point of the importance of the present and why people shouldn’t let their lives slip away too easily.  I truly loved this picture.  Connolly’s writing and directing beautifully illustrate his message and the performances of his amazing cast, particularly Plaza, Duplass, and Johnson, breathe life into these wonderful characters.
