SXSW Review: SLEEPWALK WITH ME

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

An aspiring comedian struggles to find his comedic voice and has difficulty facing reality, regarding his failing relationship and sleep disorder.  Based on his real life experiences, comedian Mike Birbiglia writes, directs and stars in this cute, funny and imaginative film.  Birbiglia plays Matt Pandamiglio, a dissatisfied bartender in a comedy club who actually desires to be the talent on stage.  Occasionally, his boss allows him to try out his comedy, but usually with poor results.  Matt has had a lengthy relationship with girlfriend Abby (Lauren Ambrose).  While they care for each other very much, they have hit a dead end and are in complete denial about it.  To make matters worse, Matt suffers from a type of sleepwalking disorder which often puts him in some highly dangerous situations.  Matt is forced to deal with these problems when he can no longer hide from them.

I enjoyed this humorous and sweet story about true-to- life situations and problems.  I particularly enjoyed the dream sequences which perfectly and comically work as dramatizations of Matt’s desires and fears.  Birbiglia takes his funny comic material to a completely higher level with his movie, thus proving himself as a capable and talented film writer and director.
