Written and directed by Joko Anwar (Gundala, Satan’s Slaves, Smothered), Ghost in the Cell is a genre-blending horror-thriller-supernatural-comedy. The film screened in Austin, TX, at Fantastic Fest in September and won Best Picture in the Horror Features category. Ghost in the Cell debuts on Digital October 27th.
Synopsis: Director Anwar plunges viewers into a high-security prison ruled by feuding gangs and a tyrannical warden. The arrival of a new inmate kicks off a series of mysterious, gruesome murders that leave its victims on morbid display. The hapless inmates trapped in prison must overcome their rivalries to unmask an invisible, otherworldly enemy. No one is safe as the cells cage in the horrors and a ghost roams the prison with murderous intent.
I have attended Fantastic Fest for most of the past two decades. Many great films are offered, yet some usually stand out and stay with you. Ghost in the Cell is one for me this year with the outstanding script and performances. I was most surprised by the humor woven into the grim, dangerous circumstances of this prison compound. I didn’t expect as much, and yet it was a welcome break before the next horrific scene. One scene I won’t soon forget is from the “art room” for the prisoners. I dare not say much to avoid spoilers, but the scene goes from prisoners finding an escape through art to tragedy descending once more. What I did notice about each of the most gruesome attacks within the prison is how the deceased appear to be left as if on exhibit for others to see.
Ghost in the Cell features Abimana Aryasatya, Almanzo Konoralma, Aming Sugandhi, Arswendy Bening Swara, Bront Palarae, and Dimas Danang Suryonegoro.
