GREEN GHOST AND THE MASTERS OF THE STONE

cover

by Liz Lopez

If there is someone who likes the color green, underground fights, mixed martial arts, comedy, plus supernatural drama and fantasy – Green Ghost and The Masters Of The Stone – is the film to catch this weekend as it opens exclusively In Texas theaters April 29, 2022. The action-filled adventure feature film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael D. Olmos (Filly Brown, “Mayans”). Olmos co-wrote the screenplay with Charlie Clark (Executive Producer), Brian Douglas and Rafael Antonio Ruiz. The film has been likened to be in the “style of comedy-horror martial-arts movies of the 1970s and ’80s” and fans of those films from the era may well indeed find a blast from the past coming through this story.

The description of the film may sound like a “mash up” of genres but it works overall with an experienced director and a great cast of veteran actors as Danny Trejo (Machete), Pepe Serna (Scarface), Renée Victor (“Weeds,” Paranormal Activity 5: The Marked Ones, Libertad), Marko Zaror (Machete Kills, Alita: Battle Angel, and a Fantastic Fest favorite star from a few years back), Andy Cheng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Charlie Clark (Daddy’s Home, Pepe & Santo vs. America) may be newer to the film industry but does well in this lead role on his own and in scenes with established actors like Kuno Becker (“Dallas,” “CSI: Miami“ TV Series) and Sofia Pernas (“The Brave,” “Jane the Virgen” TV Series) who perform solidly as his character’s adoptive brother and sister, Marco and Karina.

The music composer is Rocco (Redeemer, Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman, The ABCs of Death) and includes “Eye of the Tiger” (in Spanish as “El Ojo del Tigre”) by Robert Rodriguez’s Chingon band which can’t be missed.

The film is set in a Texas border town where Charlie (Charlie Clark) has a dealership that is not doing well. He moonlights and provides back up as a masked “Green Ghost” to brother Marco at underground fights. Karina and Charlie are approached by unknown assailants and Charlie is unprepared in skill, feeling totally out of the loop. The three siblings go to their Nama (Renée Victor) and learn of some family history (drama with her sister who seeks to do evil) and how a green emerald is key to protect humanity from Drake (Zaror, excellent), born to the evil one known as Lechusa (Elpidia Carrillo).

Charlie discovers more from La Nana about family superpowers, thus he has to learn to fight better in order to aid his siblings. There are great scenes of Charlie with the unconventional Master Gin (Trejo), Master Kane (Cain Velasquez, “WWE Smackdown!,” “WWE Raw” TV Series), Master Hung (Cheng).

The film also stars Michelle Lee, Sal Lopez, Enrique Castillo (Beatriz at Dinner, “Weeds” TV Series), Tina Rodriguez, Patricia Vonne (the latter two as oracles in the film). The film is co-produced by David R. Rodriguez, Marko Zaror, Aaron Lee Lopez, among others. It was shot in South and Central Texas, including Brownsville, South Padre Island, and Lockhart.

In Austin, this film is available in at least four theaters. Check your local theater listings.

Rated PG-13 and is 95 minutes in duration.
